[Tutorial] kicking in to your RJ tunes – How to create your own College LAN Radio

Hello to all fellow music lovers.

  • Do you have an urge to be popular?
  • Do you believe to have that RJ instincts in you?
  • Do you have ample amount of time to waste?
  • Are you geeky enough to work around your own College LAN Radio but not nerdy enough to create an actual Radio over FM?

Then this is the page for you my friend cause tonight your are going to learn how to make one! 😛

All you need is Winamp & all the goodies in this juice pack(click to download!) 12.6MB

Enough with the Jibber Jabber lets start with the tutorial.

STEP 1

Install all the shit in the zip 😉

Now I have a 64bit Windows machine, if you are still stuck up in the 90s and have a 32 bit vintage PC or a shiny new mac or nerdy linux(well why are you here then?) click->  http://www.shoutcast.com/broadcast-tools and download(SHOUTcast DNAS) whichever suits you.

STEP 2

In this step we’ll try to setup our server. Go to C:\Program Files\SHOUTcast or wherever you installed the sc_sever2 file.

Now open the sc_serv_basic.conf file in notepad(caution have a backup of it) and there would be alot of info in it. It is basically stores some important information about your server. All you need to do is remove the password for users and create an admin password(to tell them who is the boss). It should look just like this ->

ALSO if your conf contains both “streamid=1″ and “streampath=/test.aac” then delete either of them i.e there should be always one that should be present.

Save it and then open sc_serv.exe (if in C drive then you need open it as admin) present in the same directory.

A command prompt type window will open with stuff like this ->

Press 0 and then enter. Now we have our server running. Do not close this window! otherwise your radio won’t work.

STEP 3

Now shoot up your Winamp player. If you don’t have Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source window opened with the player or accidentally closed it(because your are a nimrod), then right click anywhere on the player and go to Options> Preferences. Or just go to Options>Preferences in the menu toolbar. Scroll down to Plugins on the left and then to DSP/Effect and finally right click on the Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source DSP v2.2.3 as in the image->

STEP 4

Now you need to setup your radio. In the Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source plugin window go to the Output Tab.
Under Connection Check that your Address is setup as localhost and Port to 8000(set default in conf file).
Under Yellow Pages you may edit the name and info which will be displayed. Make sure the Make this server public is ticked UNTICKED.
Leave everything as such if your are not that of a whiz kid.

STEP 5

Click Connect and if everything goes all right you are probably on!

Now you may ask – So how people connect to my playlist? well first find out your PC IP address. Consider it to be 192.168.1.1 so guide your listeners to go to 192.168.1.1:8000 on their browser and then to click on stream 1 followed by Listen link on that page or just click here http://192.168.1.1:8000/listen.pls?sid=1. A listen.pls file will get downloaded which could be played in various media players like VLC or even on iPod, iPhone or iPad directly if connected to the network.

And there you go, now you have your own radio!

If you wanna really kick in as an RJ and throw your voice over your listeners then you may go under Input Tab of Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source plugin. Then under Input Device select Soundcard Input to speak away whatever crap you wanna say with more comprehensive controls over your Radio.

This rounds up the tutorial and if you have any doubts do feel free to comment. 🙂
